本套书以“科普图画书”的形式，详尽地介绍中国古代在科学发现、技术发明、工程建设等方面的成就，共分为两辑。如果说第一辑的“四大发明”是比较独立具体地介绍某一项技术发明，那么第二辑则是比较全面系统地介绍了我国古代在某一技术领域的技术成果，主要包括纺织术、农耕术、营造术和制瓷术。本书以图文结合的方式对中国古代建筑的基本特征、主要工艺进行了介绍，比如，古建筑的屋顶主要有硬山式、悬山式、歇山式、庑殿式、攒尖式等；墙体有山墙、檐墙、槛墙、扇面墙、隔断墙等；古建筑的门有广亮大门、金柱大门、蛮子门、如意门、垂花门、乌头门、隔扇门等。同时，从巍巍古都城到传统民居，从寺、塔、园林到桥梁、长城，分门别类地展现了中国古代多样的建筑形式。比如佛塔有楼阁式、密檐式、亭阁式、覆钵式、花式等；桥梁有梁桥、吊桥、浮桥、握桥、拱桥、栈道桥等。充分地展现了中国传统建筑的工艺风采。In the form of a “popular science picture book”, this set of books introduces in detail ancient China’s achievements in scientific discoveries, technological inventions, and engineering constructions. If the “Four Great Inventions” in the first volume gave a relatively independent and detailed introduction to a technological invention, the second volume introduces the achievements of ancient China in a technical field in a comprehensive and systematic manner. These include farming, textile, porcelain and construction techniques.This well illustrated book provides an insight into the characteristics and craftsmanship of ancient Chinese architecture. For instance, the main types of roof for ancient buildings included the yingshan gable roof, xuanshan overhanging gable roof, xieshan nine-ridged roof, wudian five-ridged roof and cuanjian tented roof. For the walls, there were the gable, eave, sill, fan and partition walls. There were guangliang (wide and bright), jinzhu (golden pillar), manzi (barbarian), ruyi (be as one wishes), chuihua (festoon) and wutou (black head) front gates, as well as lattice doors. From majestic ancient capitals to traditional residences, from temples, pagodas and gardens to bridges and the Great Wall, various architectural forms are displayed in categories. There are examples of Buddhist pagodas in the styles of mansion, multiple eaves, pavilion, mchod-rten and free-style, and bridges of beam, suspension, pontoon, cantilever beam, arch and plank path. All these fully demonstrate the craftsmanship of traditional Chinese architecture.
