《自然哲学的数学原理（导读注释版）》一书以八条“定义”和三条“公理或运动的定律”及一条长长的附注开篇，对书中用到的基本概念，诸如质量、运动、惯性、作用力、向心力及其度量方式等给出了定义和必要的说明，详细介绍了物体运动的三大定律：惯性定律、力和运动关系的定律、作用和反作用定律。在随后的推论和附注中，牛顿介绍了力的合成与分解、运动叠加性、动量守恒、伽利略相对性等原理，它们构成了全书的理论基础。《自然哲学的数学原理（导读注释版）》正文内容包括三卷，前两卷分别讨论物体在无阻尼的自由空间中以及在阻尼介质中的运动，第三卷是全书的压卷之作，导出和证明了万有引力定律以及一些哲学上的思考。
牛顿（1642—1727），物理学家、天文学家和数学家，被公认为有史以来最伟大的和影响最深远的科学大师。1703年任皇家学会会长。1708年被安妮女王封为爵士。

Thus air of a double density,in a double space,is quadruple in quantity;in a triple space, sextuple in quantity.The same thing is tu be understood of snow,and fine dust or powders, that are condensed by compression or liquefaction,and of all bodies that are by any causes whatever differently condensed.I have no regard in this place to o medium,if any such there is, that freely pervades the interstices between the parts of bodies. It is this quantity that I mean hereafter everywhere under the name of body or mass. And the same is known by the weight of each body,for it is proportional to the weight, as I have found by experiments on pendulums,very accurately made, which shall be shown hereafter.
