《功利主义》成书于1861年，是约翰·斯图亚特·密尔最重要的伦理学著作。在书中，密尔从他所处时代的哲学界现状出发，认为当时仍缺乏令人满意的道德评判标准。他进而指出，任何关于道德的理论探究都离不开功利主义这个哲学原点。进而，密尔不仅有力回击了社会上针对功利主义的种种曲解、批评，例如当时不少哲学家批判功利主义不过是享乐主义，密尔提出反驳并指出功利主义的深层含义——不是指行为者自身的*大幸福，而是指*大多数人的*大幸福。密尔还根据功利主义原则阐述了功利主义与正义原则之间的关系。
