The Central Pier offers all the fun of the fair, withrides, games and old-fashioned "guess your weight" chal-lenges. A few blocks south, another pier has been remod-eled into an ocean-liner-shaped shopping center. Thesmall and faded Arts Center and Historic Museum, on theGarden Pier, at the quiet northern end of the Boardwalk,has a free collection of seaside memorabilia, postcards,photos and a special exhibit on Miss America, as well astraveling art shows. A block off the Boardwalk, wherePacific Avenue meets Rhode Island Avenue, and at theheart of some of the city's worst deprivation, the Ab-secon Lighthouse was active until 1933, but is now asmall free marine museum, with separate entrance to the167 ft tower.
Atlantic City's beach is free, family filled and sur-prisingly clean considering its proximity to the Boardwalk.Beaches at neighboring Ventnor, a jitney ride away, arequieter, but charge users $ 3.50 per week.
