‘Herald of a new future’1
Victoria （1819-1901）,queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland,and empress of India, was born on 24 May 1819 at Kens-ington Palace, London. She was the only legitimate childof the fourth son of King George III, Edward Augustus,duke of Kent (1767-1820), who in 1818 had abandonedJulie de St Laurent, his mistress of many years, in orderto join his brothers in the attempt to provide an heir tothe throne. His wife was a young widow: born PrincessVictoire of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1786-1861), she had mar-ried the prince of Leiningen, with whom she had two chil-dren, Prince Charles and Princess Feodore, before his deathin 1814. Among the duchess's brothers were Ernest, dukeof Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, who was the father of the futureprince consort, and the future king of the Belgians Leopold I079o-1865), who had been the husband of Princess Char-lotte of Wales. Charlotte's death in 1817 had precipitated theefforts to produce a new heir for the throne. Unsubstantiated rumours that Victoria was not her father's child surfaceperiodically.
